Tips to Prevent Water Damage at Your Fort Wayne Home During Summer Thunderstorms
In July, we helped many families on the northeastern side of Fort Wayne with flooded basements. Summer isn’t over yet!
Is your family protected from water damage caused by thunderstorms? Check out these tips to prevent water damage at your Fort Wayne home.
Insurance Policy: If you have a basement, review your insurance policy with your agent to ensure you have drain back up/sump pump coverage.
Battery Backup: Install a battery backup sump pump. Check your primary and backup sump pump annually to be sure they are both operational.
Water Alarm: Install a water alarm sensor to detect water, which can lessen the impact of water damage by alerting you the second it is detected.
Gutter Extensions &/or Downspouts: Install gutter extensions and/or downspouts to ensure water from heavy rainfall runs away from your home.
Maintain Proper Humidity: It is recommended to maintain humidity levels between 40-60% within your home.
Dehumidifier: Install a dehumidifier, especially if you have a basement, in order to maintain proper humidity levels.
Keep Registers Open: Open registers will allow airflow throughout your home.
Plastic Tote Storage: Store personal items in plastic totes rather than cardboard boxes. If water damage does occur, this will protect your personal items. A cardboard box will become wet and soggy, potentially damaging the contents inside.

“During the recent rainstorm on the NE side of Fort Wayne, we had water in our basement that saturated the carpet. We had no idea what to do. We checked to make sure the sump pump was working, but saw about 7 inches of water around the foundation where the ejection port is. I called [A Local Restoration Company] and they cleared the drain tile, but there was just too much water. We began using shop vacuums to get the water out of the carpets.
On Friday, the smell was getting bad, and we had 1800 SF of carpet removed along with the drenched padding. We called [A Franchise Restoration Company] to come for an estimate and was told that 3 feet of drywall had to be removed along with all of the baseboards, insulation, kitchen cupboards, doors, and possibly the bath tub. Just the tear out was going to cost thousands of dollars.
We called Alan on Saturday and within three hours, he arrived at our home, and began the process of drying out the basement. He stayed until after 10 PM to make sure everything was working as it should, and explaining everything to us as he was doing it.
Alan came back every day to make sure things were going according to his plan. By Tuesday, we were completely dry, and all of the equipment was gone. We didn’t have to have anything removed, and the water and smell was gone. He saved everything!!!
Alan and Audrey are honest, loyal, and hard working people. They explain the process as they are doing it, and put you at ease, just as if they were lifelong friends. If you have any water problems, call Alan and Audrey immediately. Don’t wait even one day. I know I will if something like this would ever happen again.” – Mr. & Mrs. Diemer

Since then, we’ve gotten to know her better and she is just the sweetest thing. We’re always happy to see Paris and her brother Phill (who will be a future pet of the month!).
