Carpet Care Tips
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum!
As a general rule, vacuum traffic areas 3 to 5 times per week. This will prevent dirt from settling into the carpet. Walking on dirt and grit that has settled to the base of the fibers causes an abrasive action, which results in the appearance of traffic lanes and worn areas.
Use a powerful upright vacuum with a beater brush and excellent filtration system for carpet.
Change the disposable bag often to ensure efficiency. We recommend using a vacuum that is approved by the Carpet & Rug Institute. View CRI approved vacuums here.
Maintain your vacuum.
Take your vacuum in for a checkup annually to keep it operating at peak performance. Locally, we recommend Service All Vacuum for your vacuum maintenance and repair needs. Visit Service All Vacuum online here.

Reapply carpet protector.
This should be done each time the carpet is professionally cleaned to keep stains from setting in and the soil from grinding in. Learn more about carpet protector here.
Place walk-off mats or bound remnants on top of carpet at high traffic areas, such as in front of the sofa or chairs and entry/exit points.
These will absorb soil and moisture to prevent them from being tracked inside your home. Clean mats on a regular basis so they don’t become sources of soil themselves. Check area rugs for colorfastness before placing them on the carpet. The color in some rugs may bleed through or rugs with rubber back can discolor the carpet underneath.
Keep your garage floor and driveway clean.
This can be done by sweeping and pressure spraying to eliminate soil that can be tracked inside.
Place smooth plastic chair mats on carpet.
This will help prevent carpet de-lamination and excessive wear. Consider using these mats in your home office.
Place all plants on a plate or saucer to collect any excess water.
This will prevent water from your plants flowing out onto your carpet and causing browning of the fibers.
Repair loose carpet.
Contact a local Fort Wayne flooring retailer or carpet installer to arrange repairs.
Rearrange furniture to change the flow of traffic.
This will prevent worn traffic areas throughout rooms.
Prevent contact with household chemicals that can permanently discolor your carpet.
These could include bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, acne medicine, plant fertilizer, pesticides & swimming pool chemicals.
Remove your shoes.
Get into the habit of doing this when you enter your home. It is the best line of defense to prevent dirt and soil from being tracked through your home.
Keep it in the kitchen.
Only eat or drink in designated areas of the home, like the kitchen and/or dining room.
Take advantage of shade.
Try to reduce periods of direct sunlight onto your carpet to prevent color fading. Use blinds and shades or window tinting.
