Our 13-Step Carpet Cleaning Process
All scheduled cleanings come with our Risk Free Guarantee, which states:
We will inspect the areas to be cleaned and let you know what you can expect and, in some circumstances, what we can’t guarantee. If your expectations are not met, or a spot returns within 30 days, we will return – no questions asked – and re-clean the area for free. If you are still not pleased, we will refund your money. We aren’t happy until you are. Nothing is more important than your 100% complete satisfaction because we want you to be our lifelong client!
Client must contact Distinctive within 30 days of initial cleaning, no exceptions. New stains or spots that occur after initial cleaning that were not caused by Distinctive and were not due to an oversight by Distinctive are not covered by the Risk Free Guarantee.
1. Pre-Inspection
This is the most important step in the carpet cleaning process. We will inspect your carpet to determine the fiber and style. We will set your expectations for the results of the cleaning. We will ask you about the cause of any spots or stains to help us choose the right cleaning solution to remove it. We will also look for preexisting damage to your carpet, such as yarn runs or pulls, bad seams, bleach spots or color loss and de-lamination. We will measure the square footage of all areas to be cleaned to the nearest half foot.
2. Pre-Vacuuming
The more dry soil that is removed before cleaning, the better the cleaning results will be. Pre-vacuuming can be done by our customer before our arrival or we can perform the task and it will be added to the invoice.
3. Furniture Moving
We will use furniture sliders to move any furniture you request. We will carefully clean around the base of any large or fragile furniture. You can save money by being prepared if the room is mostly emptied out. Or we can clean the open areas around furniture.
4. Pre-Conditioning
Applying a safe pre-conditioner to the carpet will loosen the soil, making it easier to clean, which will provide better results.
5. Agitation
This is done with either a carpet grooming rake or a counter rotating brush machine. This releases releases soils faster, which results in a better cleaning.
6. Cleaning
Our Butler carpet cleaning machine is mounted inside our truck and is powered by the truck engine (PTO/Direct Drive). Because it is powered by the truck engine, our cleaning machine is able to generate 200-250 degree hot water, strong pressure and strong vacuum, which all contribute to a better cleaning. Clean, fresh water from our holding tank is heated to 200-250 degrees and is coupled with the cleaning solution. We use the floor cleaning tool to apply the cleaning solution to the carpet. Then we extract the solution along with dirt, germs, pet hair, allergens, and anything else in your carpet back into a separate wastewater tank in our truck. We take several cleaning strokes, followed by several vacuum strokes over the same pass to ensure a thorough cleaning. While many companies use similar equipment as Distinctive, we are confident that none of them are as thorough or as detailed. The cleaning technique and the patience of the technician play a large role in the final results of the cleaning.
7. Edge Cleaning
Dark edges of rooms or tight spaces that could not be cleaned with the floor cleaning tool are detailed with a small hand tool.
8. Expert Spot Removal
Some spots or stains need extra attention. Distinctive is experienced and trained in using a variety of spot removal solutions.
9. Grooming
After your cleaning is completed, a grooming rake is used to remove tool marks and footprints, which will give your carpet a uniform appearance.
10. Carpet Protection
We always recommend applying Carpet Protector after each cleaning to help your carpet stay cleaner longer and to protect it from permanent stains. Imagine applying a wax coating to the exterior of your vehicle to protect it from the elements. Carpet Protector does the same for your carpet. Learn more about Carpet Protector here.
11. Furniture Leg Protection
Depending on the style of legs of your furniture, we will apply blocks or tabs underneath them to protect your freshly cleaned carpet.
12. Speed Drying
We use high-speed fans while cleaning to begin drying. We will also adjust your heating & air system, furnace fan blower, ceiling fans, and any portable fans you have to dry your carpet as soon as possible.
13. Post-Inspection
We will review the results of the areas we cleaned with you. We will also offer you complimentary maintenance and care tips.

Master Certified
Our owner, Alan Falls, is an IICRC Master Certified Carpet & Textile Cleaner. Being Master Certified is the highest distinction in the Cleaning & Restoration Industry, which requires diligent training and study over many years. Only 3.7% of people within the industry ever attain this prestigious designation. Since Alan is on every job, you never have to worry about an under-trained or under-performing technician coming to your home to botch your cleaning.
Pricing
- Instead of charging by the amount of rooms we are cleaning, we price per the square footage of each room. This ensures a uniform rate for each customer.
- All rooms are measured wall-to-wall to the nearest square foot. We will clean around large items that are not practical to move, such as TV cabinets, china cabinets, bookcases, pianos, etc.
- Empty rooms are priced at $.52 per square foot.
- For example, if your 20×28 carpeted living room is empty, with the exception of your TV cabinet, you would receive the empty rate of $.52 for your 560 square foot living room.
- When cleaning carpeted rooms where the furniture has not been moved out, we will measure the room wall-to-wall and get the total square footage. Then we will measure the sizes of the furniture in the room, i.e. sectional sofa, king size bed, dresser, nightstands, etc. We will deduct the sizes of those pieces from your total square footage, so you only pay for the actual carpet being cleaned.
- For rooms with furniture, the price is $.58 cents per square foot.
- These areas are priced at $.52 per square foot.
- Carpeted steps and stairs are always high traffic areas. Since we usually step in the same spot on the center edge of the step, that is the dirtiest area. We use a small detail tool to clean and scrub steps, including the edges along the wall, the edge, and the riser. Then the tool marks are groomed away with a carpet rake.
- Steps are priced at $4.95 each and landings are priced at $.55 per square foot.
- Applying carpet protector after your cleaning will help your carpet stay cleaner for longer, so you can avoid premature replacement. Learn more about the benefits of Carpet Protector here.
- Carpet protector is priced at $.20 per square foot.
Carpet Cleaning FAQ
- Carpet should be dry within 1 – 24 hours. Drying time can vary based on the type of carpet fiber, the soil level, humidity, and airflow. Review our drying tips for more information.
- Avoid walking on freshly cleaned, damp carpet. If that is not possible, wear clean, white socks, inside shoes, or ask us for a free pair of shoe covers.
- We recommend waiting 24 hours or until the carpet is dry to replace furniture.
- The cleaning solutions we use are environmentally friendly. We use them according to manufacturer’s directions and SDS Sheets. They have been on the market for over 30 years and are used daily by thousands of companies in thousands of homes and workplaces.
- We have successfully cleaned for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities, however every individual is different. If you are very sensitive, you may consider leaving the home while we are working and have a friend or family member present.
- We also offer a green cleaning solution made of only food grade ingredients, however it may have limited cleaning ability. If you are interested in this, just ask us!
- Absolutely not!
- However, this was true several years ago when shampooing carpets was the common method of cleaning. The shampoo could not be properly extracted from the carpet with the tools at the time, so dirt would quickly attract to the sticky, soapy, shampooed areas. Thus, the carpet would get dirtier, faster.
- These days, Distinctive uses the hot water extraction or “steam cleaning” method of cleaning. Our modern-day carpet cleaning tools, truck-mounted machines and experienced technicians apply the correct amount of cleaning solution, rinsing action, and vacuum to properly clean your carpet. Our cleaning method will not leave a soapy residue to attract soil.
- Our cleaning technique involves not over-wetting your carpet. Some cleaners soak your carpet with water and their cleaning solution, but don’t have the patience to vacuum 100% of it out. That means they are leaving, not only their water and cleaning solutions behind, but also the dirt and germs within your carpet! Distinctive takes more time cleaning, because that is what is required to truly extract all of the dirt from your carpet.
- No. If a carpet is cleaned correctly, using cleaning solutions within the carpet manufacturers pH requirements, the protector is not removed. If high alkaline pH cleaning products are used, they can remove the protective coating.
- However, abrasive soil and foot traffic will flake or rub off the protective coating. When this happens, dirt has the ability to grab hold of the fiber and stick. The carpet will now appear to soil faster. The good news is that carpet protector can be reapplied to the fibers after it is professionally cleaned to restore what has been worn off. The fiber manufacturers indicate that after two years, there will be a significant loss of the original protector. Carpet protector should be reapplied annually, especially in heavy use areas. When you keep the fibers completely protected, your carpet will look cleaner longer and emergency spot cleaning will be easier and more effective.

- It is easier to clean the carpet after it has been stretched. If the carpet is being stretched it must be 100% dry. If carpet is properly stretched, cleaning should not affect it. Occasionally some carpets may ripple or bloat after cleaning but will typically return to their original look after they dry.
- Distinctive uses the Hot Water Extraction Method, or “steam cleaning,” which is the only recommended cleaning method by all carpet manufacturers.
- No. We thoroughly clean deep down into the fibers to remove dirt and stains. Our equipment and cleaning technique ensures we do not over-wet your carpet and pad.
No, there is no need to vacuum the carpet after it has been cleaned.
The age of a stain doesn’t make much difference. Professional spotting solutions and techniques can remove many challenging stains, even if they have been there for years. A paint stain is one exception. As paint dries, it cures and this can make some types of paint more difficult to remove from carpet. Cleaning attempts with the wrong product can make stains harder for us to remove. See our Spot Removal Guide for help in choosing the right solution.
No, carpet cleaning does not wear or damage your carpet if the correct method and equipment is used. Carpet cleaning is recommended by manufacturers and actually extends the life of your carpet by removing abrasive soil that can wear and damage carpet.
Yes, wool carpet can be cleaned safely. Distinctive has cleaning solutions that are safe for wool. We can adjust the temperature of our cleaning solution to be safe.
No. There is a 110 gallon tank that holds the fresh water used for cleaning and a 2nd separate tank that holds the dirty waste water that is extracted while cleaning.
Yes we can move furniture with sliders and then place it on protective blocks while the carpet dries.
Review our preparation checklist to learn how you can save money by being prepared and having areas empty / mostly empty.
We can also just clean the open traffic areas around furniture.
