Prevent Water Damage During Summer Thunderstorms
Check out these tips to prevent water damage during summer thunderstorms at your Fort Wayne or Northeastern Indiana home.
- Insurance Policy: If you have a basement, review your insurance policy with your agent to ensure you have drain back up/sump pump coverage.
- Battery Backup: Install a battery backup sump pump. Check your primary and backup sump pump annually to be sure they are both operational.
- Water Alarm: Install a water alarm sensor to detect water, which can lessen the impact of water damage by alerting you the second it is detected.
- Gutter Extensions &/or Downspouts: Install gutter extensions and/or downspouts to ensure water from heavy rainfall runs away from your home.
- Maintain Proper Humidity: It is recommended to maintain humidity levels between 40-60% within your home.
- Dehumidifier: Install a dehumidifier, especially if you have a basement, in order to maintain proper humidity levels.
- Keep Registers Open: Open registers will allow airflow throughout your home.
- Plastic Tote Storage: Store personal items in plastic totes rather than cardboard boxes. If water damage does occur, this will protect your personal items. A cardboard box will become wet and soggy, potentially damaging the contents inside.
