Don’t Forget to Spring Clean Your Garage Floor

Indiana winters can do a number on our garage floors.  Whether your floor is concrete or has an epoxy coating, the dirt, mud, and muck from our cars and shoes can build up over time.

A clean garage floor means less dirt is tracked inside, which can help keep the rest of your home cleaner.

Did you know we’ve been cleaning concrete and epoxy garage floors for years?  Spring is a perfect time to clean up your garage floor after the long winter.

Tip

Despite What You Read On The Internet…  Avoid Using These Products for DIY Carpet Spot Removal

Baking Soda

While this may absorb some moisture which activates pet urine odor in your carpet, the powder will clump up and becomes difficult to remove.  Baking soda treats a symptom (odor), but the real source of the odor will remain.

Real World Story – We Can’t Make This Up:  When Distinctive arrived to clean a home, the carpet was cloudy white and caked full to the backing with baking soda that our client had applied!   After lots of extra rinsing and extracting, the baking soda was finally rinsed away.  Then, we used our professional oxidizing deodorizer solution to remove the source of the annoying bad smelling odor.

Dish Soap

While this may help remove a spot from the surface of the carpet, if the soap is not completely rinsed and extracted from the carpet, it will leave a sticky residue that will attract dirt later.

Real World Story – We Can’t Make This Up:  Distinctive was called to help a client with blood spots on their carpet.  Before we arrived, they tried to remove the spots with dish soap.  Unfortunately, the blood spots were still there and the carpet around the spots was blue from the dish soap.  When we began cleaning, the spots foamed and sparkled white from all of the dish soap that was still in the carpet.  We applied a defoamer and rinsed multiple times.  In fact, we ended up spending more time removing the foam than the blood spots.  Thankfully, after some professional TLC everything cleaned up great.

Bleach

Some fibers like polyester and olefin may not be affected by bleach, but color will be removed from nylon and natural fibers like wool.

Real World Story – We Can’t Make This Up:  The picture below shows the results of using bleach to attempt removal of pet stains from carpet.  Unfortunately, the pet stains are still there and the color on the carpet fibers was permanently bleached.  The carpet must either be re-dyed or replaced.  Distinctive has professional specialty solutions to remove spots and stains without causing damage.  (Bleach is not one of them!)

Don’t Forget to Clean Behind the Furniture

Out of sight, out of mind!  Sometimes we may think the area behind furniture stays clean because nobody ever goes back there and we can’t see it.  The fact is, it can look just like the picture below – full of dust, dirt, lint, forgotten items and who knows what else.

When spring cleaning this year, move your furniture from its place to vacuum, dust and clean behind it.  You’ll soon find that you’ll be breathing easier!

Some furniture isn’t always practical to move, but if it has legs and at least six feet of clearance, we can clean under it without moving it!  Or we can move your furniture on sliders, clean under it, move it back into place and protect the legs/base of the furniture while the carpet dries.
