Tips to Prevent Pet Stains & Pet Urine / Pee Odor on Carpet and Wood Floors
Remove any existing pet urine / pee stains or odors from carpet and fabric.
If your pet can smell urine odor, they will assume it is okay to relieve themselves again in that area. Studies* suggest dogs can see ultraviolet or UV light which means they can see urine spots that we as humans only see when using a black light. This may explain behaviors like marking or having accidents in the house. If the urine odor and stains are properly treated and the carpet is thoroughly cleaned, previous odors or triggers will be removed, which will reduce the chance that they will want to mark or have accidents in the house. Install a moisture barrier carpet pad.
If you replace your carpet and you are concerned about pet accidents, consider installing a carpet pad with a moisture barrier. The pet stain will still need cleaned and deodorized to remove it from the carpet using the same odor removing process. In fact, a larger area may need to be cleaned than is visible from the surface since the urine will spread out when it contacts the plastic. However, this moisture barrier pad will prevent the urine from soaking down into the carpet pad or cushion and subfloor. This is considered a premium pad so it will be more expensive. If you experience water damage and the carpet and pad are flooded, this pad is difficult to extract and dry so it must be removed and replaced.
Repair Damage Soon.
If dogs or cats claw at or scratch carpet seams or edges or loose yarns, repair any resulting damage soon before the damage becomes unrepairable. If you have new flooring installed, always keep the extra scraps in your attic just in case you need matching material for repairs caused by pets.
