Three Questions About Pet Spot and Odor Removal – Answered!

Pet Spot and Odor Removal

What Can Be Done About Pet Urine Spots and Odors?

You Love Your Home, But You Also Love Your Pet…  Is There A Solution?

It’s Getting Warmer Outside.  Why Are You Now Noticing a Urine Odor Inside Your Home?

Have you cleaned a pet accident thinking it was gone, but then one day the odor mysteriously came back?  Why?

Urine is made up of three different parts.  Many over-the-counter cleaning products remove the first component – the sticky liquid content.  Some can even remove the second component – the stain-causing pigmentation.  But few removes the third component – the uric acid crystals or “urine salts” that cause odor.  Even our professional carpet cleaning solutions will not remove the odor.  A specialized deodorizer must be used to remove the odor.

When dry, urine salts have no odor. But when humidity levels increase, or conditions are damp or humid, the urine salts attract moisture and reactivate, causing the terrible odor to return.

During spring and summer, there is naturally more humidity in the air.  Even though nothing about the pet spot has changed, pet urine odor that goes unnoticed in the winter when the air is dry, can suddenly have a terrible stench during the spring and summer.

Can We Clean Your Carpet & Just Spray a Deodorizer to Remove the Odor?

Cleaning may remove visible stains, but removing pet urine odor is a totally separate process.  If the odor source in the carpet and carpet pad is not treated, the odor will remain and may even increase temporarily because of the additional moisture from cleaning.

Some companies may apply a deodorizer or fragrance to the carpet surface, however this typically is a “Band-Aid” and is simply masking or covering up the bad smell.  Distinctive’s deodorizing process actually removes the source of the bad odor.  For example, after a hard workout at the gym, you may be sweaty and stinky.  You could mist cologne or perfume to cover up the bad smell, or you could take a shower and remove the source of the odor so you are clean and fresh.

Can You Buy an Enzyme Cleaner to Remove the Odor Yourself?

There are many DIY deodorizers and ideas on the internet for removing pet urine.  The main challenge of doing this yourself is you need to apply enough deodorizer to saturate the affected areas to treat the carpet backing and pad below, but then this solution must be removed.

Our weight assisted extraction tools and powerful truck mounted vacuum allow us to do this.  Otherwise, issues can be caused by the carpet or pad being left wet and remaining damp for an extended period of time.

We also use a black light when inspecting all affected areas in order to find the exact location of pet urine odor.  Yes, urine will glow under a black light!  This allows us to direct our odor removal efforts to each specific area, rather than just randomly applying deodorizer to areas that may have an odor.  Watch this video to see how the black light works.

Have You Had Another Company Clean Your Pet Spots, Only to Have Them Return?

Pet spots can return after cleaning if they are not neutralized and thoroughly rinsed.  This is an extra step that takes time and careful attention to perform properly.

Real World Story:

A recent Distinctive client told us she had three different companies clean her carpet and the spots always returned the next day.  She was ready to replace her otherwise good carpet.  As a last ditch effort, her neighbor referred her to us.  We cleaned her carpet, giving extra attention to the pet spots.  We followed up a week later and the spots did not return.  She was thrilled!

Some yellow and brown pet spots are more challenging to remove from certain carpet fibers.  Thankfully, Distinctive has an amazing solution that typically makes the stain disappear as it dries.
